چکیده
While the equilibrium partitioning (EqP) method has been demonstrated to effectively predict adverse effects of nonionic organic chemicals in sediment on benthic organisms by toxicity tests, only a limited number studies have performed both water-only and whole-sediment tests using same species verified validity EqP-based assessment. To further examine EqP for application wide range hydrophobicity, we conducted sorption/desorption experiments popular aquatic crustacean species, Daphnia magna (48 h), Hyalella azteca (96 h) six typical polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with three five rings an amine derivative: anthracene, phenanthrene, fluoranthene, pyrene, benzo[a]pyrene, dibenzo[a,h]anthracene, 1-aminopyrene. The linear sorption coefficient was determined ranged from 2.7 × 102 (phenanthrene) 1.2 104 L/kg (benzo[a]pyrene) highly depending hydrophobicity while aqueous concentrations were stable after 24 h desorption test. As result acute exposure system, anthracene dibenz[a,h]anthracene found be nontoxic median effect/lethal (EC50/LC50) as ranging 0.66 330 ?g/L (phenanthrene), 11 (1-aminopyrene) 180 D. H. azteca, respectively. Among these compounds, PAHs three, four, each, 1-aminopyrene subjected sediment-water tests. In LC50 phenanthrene pyrene times higher than that EC50 1.1 2.0 magna. contrast, EC50/LC50 benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) test more 5 values similar narrowly 21 28 8.8 based body residue (ER50/LR50) investigated two representative PAHs, BaP. ER50/LR50 2.3 respectively, those BaP not calculated highest concentration lower Although experimental results comparable predicted selected this study, there is risk being slightly underestimated (1.4–1.9 fold 3.7–6.1 pyrene) azteca. These reaffirm bioavailability poorly water-soluble important pathway should avoid under- overestimation via method.

متن کاملMetal-Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Mixture Toxicity in Hyalella azteca. 2. Metal Accumulation and Oxidative Stress as Interactive Co-toxic Mechanisms.
Mixtures of metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are commonly found in aquatic environments. Emerging reports have identified that more-than-additive mortality is common in metal-PAH mixtures. Individual aspects of PAH toxicity suggest they may alter the accumulation of metals and enhance metal-derived reactive oxygen species (ROS). Redox-active metals (e.g., Cu and Ni) are also c...
متن کاملThe toxicity of fluoranthene to Hyalella azteca in sediment and water-only exposures under varying light spectra.
In the US Environmental Protection Agency methods for sediment toxicity testing, the light regimen is specified as a 16:8 light dark cycle with 500-1000 lx. The potential for photoinduced toxic effects from this requirement is evaluated. Hyalella azteca were exposed to fluoranthene in both water only and sediment to examine the impact of light spectra on the toxicity of fluoranthene. The light ...
متن کاملMetal-Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Mixture Toxicity in Hyalella azteca. 1. Response Surfaces and Isoboles To Measure Non-additive Mixture Toxicity and Ecological Risk.
Mixtures of metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) occur ubiquitously in aquatic environments, yet relatively little is known regarding their potential to produce non-additive toxicity (i.e., antagonism or potentiation). A review of the lethality of metal-PAH mixtures in aquatic biota revealed that more-than-additive lethality is as common as strictly additive effects. Approaches to...
متن کاملEffect of dissolved organic matter of various origins and biodegradabilities on the bioaccumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Daphnia magna.
As a preliminary study of the influence of urban organic matter on the bioavailability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the effect of different types of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on the bioaccumulation of fluoranthene, pyrene, or benzo[a]pyrene in Daphnia magna was studied. Commercial humic substances, DOM from the aeration basin of a wastewater treatment plant, and highly biode...
